Collisions Between Car and Motorcycles

Spring weather brings an increase in motorcyclists on Florida roads, and drivers can expect to see plentiful numbers of them throughout our area. Tourists and residents both often enjoy motorcycling as a hobby, but it is important for other drivers to respect their space and their right to be on the road to prevent motorcycle accidents from occurring. In these types of accidents, motorcyclists lack the protection that comes with riding in a car and are at a distinct disadvantage for serious and potentially life threatening injuries. To ensure the safety of everyone on the road, it is important for motorists to follow some simple safety tips.

Cars and Motorcycle Safety

According to statistics from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Florida has one of the highest rates of motorcycle accident fatalities in the country. Nearly 600 motorcyclists are killed each year in our area as a result of these accidents while thousands of others suffer serious injuries. Unfortunately, other motor vehicle drivers often play a significant role in these accidents.

The American Association of Retired People (AARP) claims most drivers are unaware of how to properly interact with motorcyclists they encounter on the road. They urge motorists to be on the lookout for bikers and to be aware of the following in these interactions:

  • They have a right to their lane. Motorcyclists are entitled to complete use of a traffic lane, so give them plenty of room when passing and avoid crossing into their space.
  • Respect their right of way. Traffic rules apply evenly to all drivers, which means respecting a motorcyclist’s right of way and yielding to them in certain situations. Failure to yield is a leading contributing factor in motorcycle collisions.
  • Keep an eye out. As motorcyclists take up less room on the road, you may not see them until is too late. This is why it is important to remain vigilant, particularly in warm weather and in places where motorcyclists are likely to congregate.
  • Give them space. Remember that motorcyclists are more vulnerable to road, traffic, and weather conditions, which can result in spills, swerving, and sudden stops. Avoid tailgating and other aggressive driving behaviors when following a motorcyclist or any driver.

While some find it nerve wracking to be surrounded by motorcyclists when traveling on roads and highways, Esurance urges motorists to remember that these drivers do not have the benefit of being surrounded by metal or of safety features such as seat belts or airbags to protect them when collisions occur. Making the effort to respect and share the road with motorcyclists and their passengers can help to protect everyone against accidents and injuries.
