Thousands Injured in West Palm Beach Car Accidents During 2017
Car accidents take a heavy toll on motorists and their passengers throughout Florida each year. In addition to crashes and collisions resulting in property damages, these accidents often end up resulting in serious, potentially disabling, and even life threatening injuries. Close to home, traffic conditions in West Palm Beach and our proximity to major interstates, including I-95 and the Florida Turnpike, make motor vehicle collisions unfortunately common. Often the result of reckless behaviors on the part of other drivers, reports show these accidents result in thousands of injuries impacting residents of our area each year.
West Palm Beach Car Accident Statistics
When car accidents occur, the details on the type and severity of the crash are gathered by local law enforcement agencies. Reports are then sent on to state agencies, who gather and collect data that helps to give a snapshot of traffic safety and what areas need to be addressed. Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System (FIRES) is one of the agencies charged with collecting this information for our area. In 2017, they reported close to 400,000 accidents throughout the state. Roughly 20,000 of these occurred in Palm Beach County.
The previous year, there were more than 27,000 collisions in our county, which resulted in over 16,000 injuries and roughly 170 deaths. While these are considerably higher than current total, 2017 figures are still being gathered from local police departments regarding car accidents which occurred in the later months of the year. Unfortunately, early indicators and past trends make it likely this number will rise over the 2016 totals.
Common Causes of Car Accidents in West Palm Beach
While road, traffic, and weather conditions are often contributing factors in these collisions, reckless, aggressive driving behaviors are often to blame. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Florida leads the nation in the number of potentially deadly collisions. Common causes responsible for these accidents include:
- Speeding and going too fast for conditions;
- Aggressive driving, such as tailgating, improper passing, and failing to yield;
- Failing to obey traffic signals, such as running red lights and stop signs,
- Drowsy driving and falling asleep behind the wheel;
- Distracted driving, such as using cell phones and texts;
- Driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, and prescription or over the counter medications.
FIRES reports more than 500 accidents in Palm Beach County during January 2018 alone. To protect yourself and your passengers, drivers are urged to use defensive driving skills, such as giving other drivers plenty of space, obeying speed limits, and avoiding confrontations when possible.
